Citroën C3 I (2001-2005)

Continuing its long-standing tradition in the supermini segment, Citroën introduced the first-generation C3 as the successor to the Saxo. Officially unveiled in 2001, the model entered production in early 2002 and remained on sale until 2005 in its initial form, offered exclusively as a practical five-door hatchback.

Exterior Design

The exterior design stood out immediately thanks to its soft, rounded shapes inspired by classic Citroën models such as the legendary 2CV. A short front overhang, tall arched roofline, and compact proportions gave the C3 a friendly and distinctive character. Large, angular headlights and a simple slatted grille modernized the look, while protective black rubber strips on the bumpers and doors emphasized everyday usability, especially in urban driving.

Interior

Despite its compact footprint, the interior was impressively spacious. The high roof allowed excellent headroom for both front and rear passengers, while the elevated seating position improved visibility. The dashboard followed a curved, minimalist design theme, highlighted by a unique instrument layout: a digital speedometer placed centrally, complemented by an analog tachometer positioned above it. An additional display for the trip computer sat on top of the center console, reinforcing the car's unconventional yet functional approach.

Engines and Drivetrain

Under the hood, the Citroën C3 I offered a broad range of engines to suit different needs. Petrol units included 1.1, 1.4, and 1.6-liter engines, while diesel buyers could choose from 1.4 and 1.6-liter common-rail HDi options. Most versions were paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, while selected models featured the SensoDrive automated manual transmission. Higher trim levels could also be equipped with a four-speed hydraulic automatic.

Platform and Technology

Built on a platform shared within the PSA Group, the C3 shared many mechanical components with models from Peugeot, ensuring proven reliability and cost efficiency. Some variants were also equipped with an early start-stop system, helping reduce fuel consumption in city traffic.

Overall, the first-generation Citroën C3 (2001–2005) combined distinctive French design, clever interior packaging, and a wide choice of efficient engines, making it a popular and recognizable choice in the European supermini market.

Warning

Never use a higher amperage fuse!

Tip

Spare fuses are often in the box cover.
